Best Review:

It seems a little odd that a movie with such a good atmosphere and such a decent cast could easily fall apart because of the script. “Six Minutes to Midnight” is a spy thriller that not only doesn’t know which direction to take it in, but also falls into factual errors and logical holes. It’s not just about minor details, but also about important narrative elements, plot details and story development, which gives the viewer a mixed impression.

The story begins promisingly. A school for German girls was founded in England in 1932 to strengthen German-British relations. By 1939, the children of high-ranking Third Reich officials were studying there. The literature teacher disappears under mysterious circumstances, and Mr. Miller is sent to replace him: sort of a new teacher, but in fact – a spy for British intelligence. For the secret services, the boarding school girls may prove to be valuable prisoners of war in the event of a future war. Nevertheless, Miller’s spy games take him very far.

It is clear that “Six Minutes to Midnight” tried hard to make a kind of old-school spy thriller. Moreover, in Minutes you can even notice references to war-time propaganda movies rather than to any modern spy movies. The characters, even though they look archetypal, still evoke sympathy and even have certain dramatic qualities. The villains, on the other hand, turned out to be boring, lacking any background. Nevertheless, if you dig a little deeper, both the heroes and villains in this story fall apart. The heroine Judi Dench, the prim school principal, is still trying to avoid the pitfalls of the script, but that has more to do with the talent of the actress. But the rest of the cast looks devastated, from Jim Broadbent to James D’Arcy. Even Izzard, who played the protagonist, cannot overcome some dead ends with all his talent.

The spectacle drops off starting in the middle, when certain plot devices lead to premature solutions to conflicts. “Guilty Without Guilt” Miller begins pacing the countryside in the British outback, desperately wagering Benny Hill on a serious landmine. Such scenes were probably added to lengthen “Six Minutes,” but they clearly don’t do any good. Interesting ideas, on the other hand, such as the tense party scene or Dench’s character undergoing a change, are discarded as soon as they have been presented to the viewer.

The weak spy thriller looks old-fashioned, which is probably a plus in the context of the story. However, the overall impression of “Six Minutes” is somewhat dreary: it is not a very sensible or intelligible movie.
