Best Review:

For as long as the cinema has existed, this or that actor and filmmakers have been eager to try their hand at directing. In recent years, the number of those who want to ‘stand on the other side’ of the camera has increased and an impressive number of actors, screenwriters, producers and other representatives of the world of cinema have decided to try their hand at a new creative role, and some have even established themselves in it. Sam Hardgrave, the director of this movie who had previously worked with the team of ‘John Wick’ writers David Litch and Chad Stahelski as a stuntman in ‘Atomic Blonde’, ‘Birds of Prey’ and a number of other pictures, as well as own set stunts and action scenes in such films as ‘First Avenger: Confrontation’ (that one ‘Civil War’) and ‘Avengers: The Final Solution’.

The plot of this movie revolves around mercenary Tyler Rake, who is assigned to free the son of an international criminal from captivity. Rake has no choice but to go to the city of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh and one of the most impregnable places in the world in order to release the boy from the hostages and escort him to safety.

It’s worth admitting that in terms of ideas, this movie directed by Sam Hardgrave is nothing new. In between we have something in between ’16 Neighborhoods’ with Bruce Willis and ‘Rage’ with Denzel Washington in the lead roles, as well as the inclusion of some elements of ‘The Raid’ with Iko Weiss, ‘The Perfect World’ with Kevin Costner, ‘Leon’ with Jean Reno and several other pictures. Nevertheless, the authors of this movie have managed to combine all these elements decently on the screen. In this connection, the story not only does not seem secondary, but more than interesting.

Events develop dynamically on the screen, and despite the adherence to all the rules of the genre and certain borrowings from the above picture, to fully predict what the end of the movie is not possible. That of course plays into the intrigue of watching this movie. It intensifies the impression of how lively the main characters and how non-trivial their relationships are developed on the screen. It is as if on the example of the main hero of the tape, who gets an opportunity to redeem his sins and blunt the torment of his soul, or on the example of a young Ovi who noticeably grows up during the day and becomes a real man. The second act, or rather about 40 minutes, after a punchy and non-stop 50-minute spectacle, sags a bit. But everything is redeemed by the excellent finale, which does a great job of both drama and a little hint of a possible sequel.

Only after a couple of minutes of screen time you understand that this movie shows the birth of a new and very promising director and the further you watch the movie, the more you become convinced of it and begin to see the worthy successor of David Litch and Chad Stahelski in this director Sam Hardgrave. This Sam Hardgrave director has made a great action movie in the best tradition of Indonesian, not Hollywood action movies. Sometimes he discarded fantastic action in favor of a much more realistic and brutal spectacle, giving up on a certain lightness in favor of maximum dynamism and keeping the whole narrative in an atmosphere of non-stop action. It is promoted not only by the quality and effective action scenes, but also by the fantastic camerawork of Newton Thomas Siegel, which begs for separate deferments. At a time when many action movies bet on the most torn editing and frequent changes of shots, in this movie you can see mostly ‘long shots’ and how ingeniously they are carried out in the action scenes. Thus, allowing the viewer to feel as much a participant in the screen events as an observer. Especially in the chase scenes.

Chris Hemsworth, the actor in the title role, showed one hundred percent hit to his character on the screen. It is as if he is his Tyler Rake in real life, and watching the way Hemsworth ‘keeps in the frame’, confidently wields firearms and edged weapons, as well as easily scatters his enemies in different directions, you start to believe in it even more. At the same time, it’s worth noting that Hemsworth played an ordinary man on screen, rather than the invincible Terminator. Which also made it more lively and interesting. Golshifte Farahani, who, albeit for a less-than-impressive screen time, did a great job of getting into the image of a real tough broad. Including David Harbor, who of course is scarce in this film. But he squeezes the maximum out of every minute of his on-screen appearance. Randeep Hooda is damn good, who manages to create quite a charismatic and cool image of another action hero on screen. Not to mention Rudraksh Jaiswal, who has tried and developed his character beyond the ‘talking parcel’ image and made him just as lively on screen as possible.

Extraction (2020) is definitely one of this year’s best action movies and one of the best pictures in the rich filmography of the Netflix streaming service. Stuntman and stunt director Sam Hardgrave not only made his directorial debut very powerfully, but also created a really strong, entertaining, brutal and spectacular action movie that is made in the best traditions of Indonesian action movies and willingly bribes with almost non-stop action and adrenaline levels throughout almost the entire two hours of screen time. Allowing you to watch this movie with bated breath.
